Historic Salt route trek (Jomsom and Marpha)
Fly to Jomsom, check in at Hotel Oms Home in Jomsom the gateway to Trans-himalayan region. It is a cold desert, with sparse vegetation of thorny low bushes caragana that have yellow flower. There are weeping willows drooping over the trail and narrow stream. Blue pine and Cyprus forest cover the north facing aspect. Wild shrub include the wild rose and old man’s beard belonging to buttercup family.

It is an exciting habitat for birds of prey, usual sighting birds are lammergeier, himalayan griffon and golden eagle. Other include, red-billed and yellow-billed chough, wallcree[er, ibisbill, chukor partridge, Tibetan partridge, snowcock. It is the bottle-neck during fall migration of demoiselle crane and many other trans-himalayan and continental migrants including barheaded-geese. Resident bird species are accentors, finches, snow pigeon, hill pigeon, and golden finches.

Interesting highland wildlife to explore in this region include musk deer, Himalayan thar, serow, pika (mouse hare), marmot, grey hare, gray wolf, Tibetan lynx and elusive snow leopard.

It lies in the rain shadow of himalaya. It is situated on the bank of Kaligandaki that is an antecedent river, older than the original Himalaya. This river cuts the dynamic canyon considered to be the deepest in the world. This is a historic route for salt trade from Nepal to Tibet.

Ethnically this region is very rich in culture habituated by Thakalis. Recently this area is developed as an apple orchard and high quality including marpha brandy.

Cultural aspect

Monastery including Tashi Lha Khang of Karma Pa sect located at the center of the Marpha Village thought to be about two centuries old.

Mustyang Eco Museum displays various saspects of culture and nature of Mustang area.

This package is designed for soft adventure, strenuous trekking is avoided, four or five hours of leisurely walk is anticipated in this cold desert environment terian.

Eectricity to this region is supplied by a successful micro hydro.

Pony trek to Mukti Nath is an option for the enthusiasts. It includes overnight stay at Mukti nath. It is also an exciting habitat for birds of prey, usual sighting birds are lammergeier, himalayan griffon, golden eagle, red-billed and yellow billed chough, chukor partridge.

On return journey we will visit Kagbeni village and also stop for lunch. This is the gateway to Upper Mustang. The return journey also includes experience the wind sweeping through the Kali Gandaki valley.

Yak and Lulu are the chief domestic livestock. Yak is a beast of burden, which helps to local to carry good through heavy snow of the alpine region. Lulu are also know as the wide jawed cows, they are small and are endemic variety of this region. Local tend to sustain their livelihood by keeping livestocks, (yak, lulu, goats, and sheeps). Pashmina or the cashmere is extracted from the mountain goat also known as chyangra.
